We are fortunate to have such a great clay that is a dream to work with on the wheel. The bonus is that it is native to Nova Scotia. The brown earthenware glass is hand thrown, covered with a liquid white clay (called a slip). Coloured slips were now brushed on to create the iris pattern. After it has been fired once, the glass is glazed with a transparent glaze and fired a second time. Layering a clear glaze over the iris adds an interesting depth to the surface, one that you don’t tire of looking at.
